Medicare for All is a good idea that will improve our lives and make us healthier and happier. Correction: this article originally stated that Americans live five years less than Canadians and Brits, rather than three. Our eclectic and verdant rainforest issue!

Is Medicare for all taking away people’s insurance?

Medicare for All is not “taking away” people’s insurance, in the sense that they will have less coverage; it’s changing the payment structure of their insurance, routing money through a public entity rather than a private one.

Should we adopt Medicare for all or have doctors for all?

Doctors won’t work for Medicare rates. If we adopted Medicare for All, we’d end up with doctor shortages and long wait times like they have in Canada and the U.K. This Prager U video, for example, hits #2, #3, and #4. Texan Congressman Dan Crenshaw covers most of the same ground here, as well as touching on #6.

What is Medicare for all and how does it work?

Medicare for All is a euphemism for a government-run, single-payer health care system, in which a government plan replaces private health insurance. Proponents have latched on to the Medicare for All name as a marketing ploy because most seniors like their Medicare coverage.

The American Medical Association were the top opponents of the plan. They hired a PR firm called Campaigns Inc. that rose to fame in California, helping to defeat a statewide universal health insurance plan.

Why has Medicare become more expensive?

Medicare Part B covers doctor visits, and other outpatient services, such as lab tests and diagnostic screenings. CMS officials gave three reasons for the historically high premium increase: Rising prices to deliver health care to Medicare enrollees and increased use of the health care system.

What is the biggest disadvantage of Medicare Advantage?

Medicare Advantage can become expensive if you're sick, due to uncovered copays. Additionally, a plan may offer only a limited network of doctors, which can interfere with a patient's choice. It's not easy to change to another plan. If you decide to switch to a Medigap policy, there often are lifetime penalties.

Why do doctors not like Medicare Advantage plans?

If they don't say under budget, they end up losing money. Meaning, you may not receive the full extent of care. Thus, many doctors will likely tell you they do not like Medicare Advantage plans because private insurance companies make it difficult for them to get paid for their services.

The Failing Health Insurance System Is Obamacare

Democrats claim M4A is necessary because health care costs too much and the private insurance system isn’t working. But that “system” they’re criticizing is the Affordable Care Act, crafted and passed by only Democrats, which was supposed to provide excellent coverage with a wide range of affordable options.

How Single-Payer Systems Control Health Care Spending

M4A proponents point out that single-payer countries spend less on health care—often much less—than the U.S. But that’s not because those systems are more efficient. 1

Some Single-Payer Countries Allow Opt-Outs

Many U.S. single-payer advocates—including Sanders, the new House bill, and the group Physicians for a National Health Program—want everyone to be in the single-payer system. They believe that, if allowed, higher-income people would opt out of the national plan, reducing the pressure on Congress to keep the government program adequately funded.

Care Will Be Rationed

All government-run health care programs ration care. Some rationing is subtle, some is blatant. But they all do it.

The Government Decides Which Treatments You Can Have

Government-run health care systems decide how to allocate funds in two primary ways: cost vs. benefits or political power. If bureaucrats believe a new drug or medical device is too expensive compared to the benefits, they likely won’t cover it—even if that is the best option for some patients.

Conclusion

The same people who designed Obamacare, with all of its problems, now want the public to trust them with creating a whole new health care system.

Hudson’s mother, who recently had to quit her job at McDonald’s because of poor health, now relies on a GoFundMe campaign to pay for her medical care. “My heart is constantly pounding, just kind of waiting for the other shoe to drop,” Hudson said—meaning, she’s dreading the day her mother gets sicker and dies.

Is single payer health care free?

Single-payer health care, the kind that exists in Canada and some European countries, would make medical care free or nearly free for all Americans. Under some versions of these plans, private insurance would be eliminated, and all Americans would be covered under one, government-run plan, similar to Medicare.

Does Amy Wood have dentures?

Wood now has dentures, and they fit poorly. Her dental insurance only covers a new pair every five years. Throughout this saga, Wood was frustrated that her health insurance didn’t protect her from staggering bills and difficult choices. It felt like politicians didn’t care.

Sarah Kliff

Let’s start with something you said to the New York Times for an article last week, that I thought was pretty interesting. This was for an article about possible funding cuts that hospitals might face if we moved to a Medicare-for-All system.

Adam Gaffney

It would make my position as a single-payer advocate a lot easier if I could say, hospital spending will fall 50 percent with Medicare-for-all, but it’s not realistic. I think there are savings that hospitals can achieve through efficiencies.

Sarah Kliff

What do you think are the risks of getting budgeting wrong in a Medicare-for-all system? You mention the global budgets that are in the Jayapal bill, which are pretty similar to Canada, and essentially give a hospital a lump sum to take care of patients.

Adam Gaffney

I don’t think that’s going to happen. When Medicare-for-all is passed, it’s not going to happen in a way that causes hospitals to close, or close down certain wings. I think we’ll get the payment structure right, because hospitals will have similar amounts of money to what they had in the year prior to reform.

Sarah Kliff

I think something you said just there, that hospitals will have similar amounts of money the year after Medicare-for-all passes, that would surprise a lot of people who support Medicare-for-all and believe that hospitals should face big budget cuts.

Adam Gaffney

It might. And if I think I were speaking to you 10 years ago, I would have said something different. I would have thought well, hospitals in Canada can do this for half as much, why don’t we just do that. But it’s just not realistic.

Adam Gaffney

I think awareness of the fact that every dollar spent on health care is being spent on something, so you have to be willing to put your finger on where do I want the reduction to come from. We can eliminate profits. Fire departments don’t have profits, schools don’t have profits.

Why is Medicare for All important?

And, in fact, a Medicare for All system affords more people more choice, because there are millions of people right now without healthcare who are denied the choice entirely.

Why are antibiotics less desirable than other drugs?

As a 2008 “call to arms” from the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) put it, “ [Antibiotics] are less desirable than other drugs to drug companies and venture capitalists because they are more effective than other drugs.”. That last point may sound counterintuitive.

What does "losing your insurance" mean?

Survey questions that imply Medicare for All means “losing your insurance” are actually misleading and tell us little. “Losing” implies that people will have less insurance after the transition to Medicare for All, which is what they’re worried about.

Does Medicare cover dental care in Canada?

There are differences, to be sure. The Medicare for All bill proposed by Bernie Sanders would cover dental care, for example, which isn’t currently covered by the Canadian system. (Canada’s social democratic party, the NDP, has been campaigning on a platform of extending Medicare to cover this and a few other gaps.)

Is Medicare for All a net reduction?

So would Medicare for All. It doesn’t follow, however, that instituting Medicare for All would represent a net reduction rather than net increase in most people’s personal autonomy and freedom of choice.

Does Medicare for All cover poor health?

There may be some truth in that assessment, but it’s also the case that poor health makes it more difficult to lead a healthy lifestyle. Medicare for All will provide all Americans with the preventative care they need, dealing with health issues before they snowball into something much worse.

Can you underfund the V.A.?

You can underfund the V.A. without most people noticing. You can build a far more powerful political coalition to defend the funding levels of a universal system like Britain’s NHS or the Medicare for All system democratic socialists want to institute in this country.

1. Lose Your Plan

The first thing Medicare for all would do is eliminate your private plan and make it illegal.

2. BIGGER Government

Medicare for all also would in effect double the size of the federal government, costing up to $32.6 trillion over the first decade.
