What is CASPer? CASPer is a situational judgment test (SJT). It’s a type of psychological test that will present you with realistic hypothetical scenarios and ask what would you do when faced with a particular situation—and why.

The Casper exam is administered entirely online and is composed of 12 sections. 8 out of 12 of these sections consist of a video scenario where you are participating in a conversation with 1-2 other people. This video presents an ethical dilemma or some other difficult situation.
How To Prepare
Casper offers one free practice test on their website for you to become familiar with the video scenario format and the questions that follow. There is no set way to prepare, as Casper is there to test your inherent ethical and practical problem-solving skills.
How To Think About Casper for Medical School Applications
As stated in the previous section, although Casper is meant to grade your inherent ethical and practical problem-solving skills, it is important to address the situation you are in properly and professionally.

What is Snapshot?
Recently, Altus Suite has included two more assessments along with their Casper examination. One of these assessments is called Snapshot. It is a recorded, video interview where you are asked 3 interview-style questions and have two minutes to respond to each of them.
What is Duet?
The other additional Altus assessment is called Duet. It is a “value” assessment that asks you to rank your value of the different things various medical school programs offer. Your personal preferences towards these values will be matched with the personal profiles of the school and will be sent to them.
What does CASPER stand for?
CASPer stands for “Computer-Based Assessment for Sampling Personal Characteristics.”. Although the title leaves little to the imagination, CASPer is a computer-based test that assesses your interpersonal and intrapersonal skills, professionalism, ethics, empathy, and bedside manner—outside of academics.
What is the purpose of the CASPER test?

Why do schools use CASPER scores?
Because each school sets its own criteria and has a different applicant pool, a score that is competitive for one school might not be as competitive for another. Schools use your CASPer score to get a look into another one of your “dimensions” and to try and get a better idea of how you make decisions.

Practice reading a problem and formulating an answer that identifies what the issue is, what multiple viewpoints could be, what your duty or responsibility would be, etc. 5 Read up on topics like ethical decision making, conflict resolution, medical ethics, problem-solving, and mediation.
How long does it take to get a CASPER score?
Many schools will want your CASPer score along with your secondary applications, but keep in mind that it can take about three weeks for your score to be processed. You’ll want to take the CASPer as early as the Spring of your application year and as late as July.

The answer is, not quite. To round out your application, many medical schools, both allopathic and osteopathic, have begun to request that applicants take the CASPer test and submit their results, usually along with the school’s secondary applications.
