Moving parent from CA to WA questions

Hi, I might have to move my mom from CA to WA and was wondering how long it takes for Medicare to be approved when moving to WA. Is there a good time to contact them and would it raise their premium prices. Any advice would be appreciated.

When does Medicare open enrollment period start?

It runs from January 1st- March 31st every year. They had to bring this enrollment window back because so many beneficiaries were enrolling in an Advantage plan during AEP in the fall, went to use their benefits in January, and realized it was not the coverage they wanted. Without this enrollment window, these beneficiaries had to wait an entire year to make a switch. If these plans were so great, why would CMS feel the need to bring back an enrollment period that is ONLY FOR Medicare Advantage enrollees to make changes?

Can I switch to a higher coverage plan?

Just keep in mind that, if you ever want to switch to a higher coverage plan, you would be subject to health questionnaire underwriting.

Is Medigap higher than MA?

First, it's always on the front of my mind that commissions for Medigap are usually higher than MA plans. This should not be a consideration for getting somebody into the plan they want but it CAN result in a more positive spin for Gap plans depending on who you talk to. The opposite is true for the insurance companies - MA enrollments affect their revenue from CMS (as others mentioned) so they have an incentive to get you into their plan even if it's cheap/free premium.

Does Medicare Advantage cover Medicare Part A?

With Medigap, your plan will cover anything that Medicare covers. No ifs, ands, or buts. With Medicare Advantage, you’re leaving Original Medicare and going with a private carrier who is getting paid by Medicare to take on your risk. Yes, they must cover the same services Part A and Part B covers, the caveat is they can CHOOSE how much they want to cover for that service.

Is Medicare Advantage a scam?

Ultimately, it's my opinion that you can't go "wrong" really; Medicare Advantage isn't a scam, but it's also not perfectly right for some folks. Do your research, ask for the Summary of Benefits, get that calculator out and best of luck!

Does MA cover Medicare?

MA plans must at least cover the same as Medicare would, or better. If Medicare covers a procedure, an MA plan will cover it. Sometimes those costs are a set copayment instead of the 20% you’d expect with Medicare.

Can you save money with a Medicare Advantage plan?

Secondly, I work for a company that does market research and claims analysis and the numbers show that ~80% of people will save significant money in the long run with a Medicare Advantage plan. The worst case scenario you laid out in your post COULD certainly happen, but the odds are definitely in your favor that they don't. It could also certainly happen that Medicare refuses to pay for something, in which case your Gap plan wouldn't pay either, so you run the same risk either way in my personal opinion.

Who Gets a Medicare Premium Bill?

The Medicare Premium Bill (CMS-500) goes to beneficiaries who pay Medicare directly for their Part A premium, Part B premium, or who owe the Part D Income-Related Monthly Adjustment Amount (IRMAA). Please note that, even if you collect Social Security, if you owe the Part D IRMAA, you must pay the surcharge directly to Medicare.

How to make sure Medicare is up to date?

What About Medicare Advantage?

Medicare Part C, more commonly known as Medicare Advantage, is similar to Part D in that the plans are provided by private insurance companies. That means your monthly premiums vary depending on your plan and provider. However, Part C is optional. You will never owe late enrollment penalties for a Medicare Advantage plan.

How Do You Know if You Owe the Income-Related Monthly Adjustment Amount?

Using data from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), the Social Security Administration (SSA) determines who owes the Income-Related Monthly Adjustment Amount. SSA will notify you if you owe IRMAA. This notification will include information about appealing the IRMAA decision.

How often is Medicare Part B billed?

Billing for the Medicare Part B premium occurs every 3 months. You'll be billed monthly if you owe the Medicare Part A premium or the Part D IRMAA.

How much is Medicare Part A 2021?

If you or your spouse do not have the required work history, however, the Medicare Part A premium is up to $471 per month in 2021.

When does Medicare start?

American citizens qualify for Medicare when they turn 65. You may also qualify before turning 65 if you have a disability, end-stage renal disease (ESRD), or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS, more commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease ). Your Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) begins 3 months before your eligibility month and ends 7 months later. So, if your birthday or 65th month of collecting disability is in June, your IEP begins March 1 and ends September 30.
