What are the rules for drug coverage?
Coverage rules include: requiring prior authorization by the plan before the drug is covered, quantity limits for dosage and or length of time on a drug, and/or or step therapy requirements asking you to try another drug to treat your medical condition before the Plan covers the drug prescribed by your physician.
Does Tufts Health Plan cover prescriptions?
In most cases, your prescriptions are covered only if they are filled at the plan's network pharmacies (retail or mail-order). Tufts Health Plan Medicare Preferred has contracts with Pharmacies that equal or exceed requirements for pharmacy access in your area.

Does Tufts require a prior authorization?
Tufts Health Plan’s Precertification Operations Department requires a referral, inpatient notification, or prior authorization for certain services. For a complete description of authorization and notification requirements, refer to the Prior Authorizations and Notifications chapters of the Tufts Medicare Preferred HMO Provider Manual, as well as the Authorization and Notification Policy.
Senior Care Options Plan
Tufts Health Plan Senior Care Options is available to individuals who are at least 65 years old and have Medicare and MassHealth Standard (Medicaid) or just MassHealth Standard (Medicaid).
Medicare Supplement Plans
Medicare Supplement plans are provided through private 3rd party insurance companies and are designed to fill the gaps in Original Medicare (Parts A & B) coverage. When you purchase a Medicare Supplement plan, Original Medicare remains your primary insurer, allowing you to see any doctor or facility that accepts Medicare with no need for referrals.
Group Plans (Employer Coverage)
