NCI, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, and the SEER staff have great appreciation for the potentially sensitive nature of data about persons with cancer and the need to respect the privacy of patients and providers included in the SEER-Medicare data.

Given that interest in SEER-Medicare data continues to grow exponentially, there is an ever increasing number of data requests that need to be tracked. In order to ensure that NCI is knowledgeable about how the data are being used, who is using the data and to avoid a change in scope, limitations on the number of data updates, data retention and data sharing are warranted.

However, to not prolong the complete switch to the CCW files, researchers will not be allowed to request new CCW files to combine with older files that they previously received. If additional data are required to complete an open project, an entirely new request can be made via usual processes.

U.S. Mortality

U.S. Mortality data, collected and maintained by the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), can be analyzed with the SEER*Stat software.

U.S. Populations

The county population estimates currently used in the SEER*Stat software to calculate cancer incidence and mortality rates, as well as U.S. populations at the census tract levels are available for download.

Standard Populations

Standard populations, often referred to as standard millions, are the age distributions used as weights to create age-adjusted statistics.

County Attributes

The most common uses of these data would be to create a list of the county attribute data using the case listing session, and to calculate incidence and mortality rates by county attributes using rate sessions.

Expected Survival

Expected survival life tables are used when calculating relative survival statistics and crude probability of death using expected survival.

SEER Linked Databases

Each of these databases reflects the linkage of SEER data with one or more other large data sources.

SEER Data Products

There are now two data products available: SEER Research and SEER Research Plus. This was motivated because of concerns about the increasing risk of re-identifiability of individuals.

In 1991, the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) collaborated to link NCI’s Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) cancer registry data with Medicare enrollment and claims data. Although they initially planned for this to be a one-time data linkage, the resulting SEER-Medicare database stimulated such great interest within the cancer research community that the NCI, CMS, and SEER registries decided that NCI should maintain the database and make it available to other researchers, after complying with confidentiality requirements. Now, almost 30 years later, the SEER-Medicare database continues to be a major resource to assess cancer care and outcomes in the United States.
