If you’re eligible for Medicare based on ESRD and don’t sign up right away, your coverage could start up to 12 months before the month you apply. If you become eligible for Medicare based on ESRD in February, but don’t sign up for Medicare until November, your Medicare coverage will start in February (this is called retroactive coverage).
